I find editing offers a perfect balance for my work as an artist. Although they are very different occupations, they complement each other in many ways. Both allow me to slip off into other worlds, whether it be the visual and imaginative world of a painting or the multifaceted and nuanced world of words.

After you have made initial contact with me about your manuscript, I will follow up with a few questions to get an idea of what you require. Next, I will give you an estimated cost range (minimum–maximum)* based on your needs, and indicate the expected completion date. Once these details are agreed, you provide the manuscript on (or before) the set date and I begin editing. I will contact you immediately with any questions or if there are problems/concerns.
When editing is underway, I will provide a brief progress update and send you an invoice, which will need to be paid before the completed manuscript is returned. Other payment arrangements may be made for large manuscripts or long-term contracts.
I leave detailed comments as necessary throughout the manuscript, and am happy to provide clarification regarding these and any suggested changes at no further cost.
*A specific amount can be quoted if you prefer, but I will need to see the manuscript first. Please see “Fees and charges” for further information.

New Zealand clients are invoiced in NZD. International clients are invoiced in USD or their local currency (e.g., AUD, GBP).
My charges are not calculated on a per hour basis, but rather on what actually needs to be done. When discussing an editing/proofreading job, I prefer to give an estimated cost range that takes into account the minimum cost (if the text is in great shape and it only needs proofreading and light editing) and the maximum cost (if heavier editing is required). This is based on my experience with thousands of manuscripts and authors of many different skill levels. It allows me flexibility to charge you for what is actually done, rather than what I could do.
If you prefer me to quote a specific cost based on a review of the manuscript, I am happy to do so. However, I will have to err on the side of caution and lean toward the “maximum” cost end of the spectrum.
I offer a student discount for theses/dissertations provided that sufficient time is available for editing and an advance booking has been made. I cannot offer this discount at short notice or for jobs with tight deadlines.

Theses/dissertations are often enormous documents, which means they can give rise to headaches for all concerned when using tracked changes. Therefore, I request individual chapter files for editing purposes.
An option for thesis/dissertation clients is editing on a chapter by chapter basis. That is, each chapter is sent to me for editing as it is completed and after initial supervisor review. This approach spreads the editing over a longer time period and can be more cost effective.
Please don’t leave the proofreading/editing of your manuscript until the last minute, as I am unlikely to be able to accept large documents like this with very tight deadlines. Even if by chance I am available, the cost will be high (think wounded bull, then double it).
I do not edit the reference lists of theses/dissertations, but in-text citations are edited/proofread.
